Delta Air Lines was on Friday, January 25, 2020 fined $50,000 by the US Department of Transportation to settle allegations it discriminated against three Muslim passengers who were ordered off their planes. Indonesia said on Wednesday (Jan 29) it has cut ties with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as it accused the global conservation group of overstepping its mandate in the country and unfairly criticizing efforts to extinguish out-of-control forest fires last year. The Southeast Asian nation said it had sent a letter to the WWF’s domestic office last week terminating a cooperation agreement that stretched back to 1998. The agreement involved joint work in the area of wildlife conservation and forestry, it added. An environment ministry spokesman said the WWF improperly extended its work across the archipelago into areas linked to climate change, waste management, and environmental issues.

TAIPEI—Taiwan’s top military official was killed in an air force helicopter crash Thursday morning in which seven other people died, the Defense Ministry said. Five people survived the crash in mountains outside the capital. Nine people died after Indonesia’s capital was hit by its deadliest flooding in years, authorities said Wednesday, as torrential rains on New Year´s Eve left vast swathes of the megalopolis submerged. Thousands were evacuated to temporary shelters as electricity was switched off in scores of waterlogged neighbourhoods across greater Jakarta, home to about 30 million people, with some train lines and one of the city´s airports also shut. Indonesia´s National Disaster Mitigation Agency called on residents to leave flood-hit areas.
