As per a WWF study, food waste amounts to 10 percent of GHG.

‘World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed every year on 30 July. This year the theme of the event is “Use and abuse of technology”. The Blue Heart Campaign was also launched where the blue heart represents the sadness of those who are trafficked, as well as the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.

The Global Gender Gap Report placed Pakistan at the 145th spot in a survey of 146 countries. The only worse performer than Pakistan was Afghanistan. Pakistan, which has 107 million women, closed at 56.4 percent in the report`s gender gap index.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving leader of modern Japan, was gunned down on Friday while campaigning for a parliamentary election, shocking a country where guns are tightly controlled and political violence almost unthinkable. Abe, 67, was pronounced dead around five and a half hours after the shooting in the city of Nara. Police arrested a 41-year-old man and said the weapon was a homemade gun.

Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as India`s president on July 25, 2022, making her the first person from one of the country`s marginalized tribal communities to serve as head of state. The former school teacher and state governor were elected to the largely ceremonial position last week with 64 percent of the vote by members of India`s parliament and state assemblies. Murmu, who is from the Santhal tribe and was born in eastern Odisha state, paid her respects before her inauguration at a memorial dedicated to India`s independence hero Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.

The world’s most powerful particle collider, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is set to function from July this year. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research located in Geneva. The Large Hadron Collider is a giant, complex machine built to study particles, the smallest known building blocks of all things. Three years after it was shut down for maintenance and upgrades, the collider was switched back recently.

Geologists have discovered 1.2-billion-year-old groundwater about 3 km below surface in Moab Khotsong. It is a gold- and uranium-producing mine in South Africa. This ancient groundwater is enriched in the highest concentrations of radiogenic products. Uranium and other radioactive elements naturally occur in the surrounding host rock. They provide information on co-habitating microorganisms previously discovered in the Earth’s deep subsurface.

Bali will host the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) on 7—8 July 2022. Under the theme “Building a more peaceful, stable, and prosperous world together,” this meeting will act as a strategic forum to discuss global recovery efforts. The G20 FMM will consist of two sessions. Commandos in Britain`s elite Special Air Service (SAS) corps killed at least 54 Afghans in suspicious circumstances but the military chain of command concealed concerns, a BBC investigation said on 12 July 2022. Unarmed Afghan men were routinely shot dead in cold blood by SAS troops during night-time raids during the long war, and weapons were planted on them to justify the crimes, the four-year probe found.

The whistleblower behind the “Panama Papers” which revealed major tax evasion and fraud worldwide said he feared Russian retribution, in an interview published on 23 July 2022 by Germany’s Der Spiegel. The magazine quoted him under his pseudonym, John Doe, as saying he had evidence of financial wrongdoing by top Russian officials and their allies which helped fund the war in Ukraine. Asked by Spiegel whether he feared for his life, he said, “It’s a risk that I live with, given that the Russian government has expressed the fact that it wants me dead.”

On July 1, 2022, the White House announced that Khizr Khan would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Khizr Moazzam Khan, a Gold Star father who rose to fame in 2016 for challenging Trump`s knowledge of the US Constitution, will receive America`s highest civil award the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden on July 7. The term Gold Star parents is used for individuals whose children die fighting for America. Mr Khan and Ghazala Khan are the parents of US Army Captain Humayun Khan who was killed during the Iraq war in 2004.
