The Astronaut and Oceanographer Kathy Sullivan has become the first woman to reach the deepest point on the earth. On June 7, 2020, she accompanied fellow scientist Victor Vescovo to visit the deepest known part of the ocean called Challenger Deep. Sullivan made history on October 11, 1984, with NASA, when she became the first U.S. woman to walk in space. Kathy Sullivan has become the only human being to ever experience both extremes. Sullivan was awarded three new Guinness World Records: the first woman to reach the Challenger Deep, the first person to visit space and the deepest point on Earth, and the greatest vertical extent traveled by an individual (within Earth’s exosphere).
